TODAY'S NUGGETS
✉️ Politico, brought to you by GOP astroturfing. Politico’s Morning Money newsletter ran an intriguing paid sponsorship last Friday. The ad read, “Frivolous lawsuits are costing families $4,200 in hidden taxes. Lawsuit abuse is driving up costs. Trump’s plan stops it and lowers your cost of living.” Looking into it, we found the ad’s sponsor, Make America Affordable Again, is a dark money-funded advocacy group run by former top Trump campaign strategists Chris LaCivita and Tony Fabrizio — and it has nothing to do with making regular people’s lives affordable.
- The group’s sole advocacy is for so-called “loser pays” lawsuit reform, which would dissuade regular people from suing corporations by legally mandating that plaintiffs pay their defendant’s attorney’s fees if they lose. Some red states are currently pushing bills along these lines through their legislatures.
