Dishing Out Free School Lunch
Starting in 2027, students eligible for free or reduced-price school meals cannot be charged processing fees, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said earlier this month. The new rule, announced on Nov. 1 by the Biden-Harris administration, will lower costs for families with income well under federal poverty guidelines, amounting to $57,720 for a family of four. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said the move is a “first step” in eliminating junk fees for school lunches regardless of income level.
