A federal judge rejected Johnson & Johnson’s third attempt to use a controversial legal maneuver to settle tens of thousands of lawsuits claiming its baby powder and other products were tainted with toxic asbestos and caused cancer. The settlement would have delivered a $9 billion binding payout to over 90,000 plaintiffs with ovarian and other gynecological cancer claims (some of whom died during the years-long legal battle) and ended almost all of the pharmaceutical giant’s talc-related lawsuits now and in the future.
